A baby's first time in water is quiet and quick. They float, they blink, they hold your hands β€” and if the water is warm and nobody rushes, they usually love it. That short, calm window is what this session is built around.

I'm Brad James Elliott β€” a photographer for twenty-four years, and before that fourteen years as a swimming instructor and ten as a beach lifeguard. Introducing small children to water was my job for over a decade before it was ever a photograph. Underwater work has been my specialty since 2012, and I shoot in English on set here in Barcelona.

Safety first β€” how a baby session actually runs

  • You're in the water the whole time. A parent holds the baby for every frame. I'm in the water alongside, never directing from the edge.
  • Never forced under. Most frames are at or just under the surface, for a second or two, with the baby fully supported. If your baby isn't happy, we stop β€” a calm baby is the only baby we photograph.
  • Warm water only. Infants lose heat fast, so we use a heated pool at a comfortable temperature, with short in-water spells and warm towels ready.
  • A former swim instructor and lifeguard in the water. Ten years reading small bodies in water, fourteen teaching swimming. Calm pacing is the whole method.
  • Check with your pediatrician first. Healthy babies can generally be in water from a young age β€” most guidance says there's no need to wait for a particular milestone (see Cleveland Clinic on babies in the pool) β€” but confirm with your pediatrician before we book.

When is my baby ready?

Every baby is different. On the intro call I'll ask about age, temperament and any health notes, and we plan around your baby, not a schedule.

Where we shoot β€” warm, calm, private

Because babies need warmth, the baby session defaults to a heated pool, year-round:

An unheated saltwater pool is only an option in peak summer if the water is genuinely warm enough for an infant β€” comfort comes first. Pool venue is billed separately at cost, no markup.

Frequently asked questions

Is underwater photography safe for my baby?

Done properly, yes. A parent holds the baby at all times, water is warm, sessions are short, and nothing is forced. Most health guidance says healthy babies can be in water from a young age; always check with your pediatrician first (Cleveland Clinic). I'm a former swimming instructor (14 years) and beach lifeguard (10 years), so the person in the water with you has spent two careers keeping people safe in water.

Will you push my baby underwater?

No. Frames are at or just under the surface for a second or two, always parent-supported, and only ever with a calm baby. If your baby isn't enjoying it, we stop.

What age is best?

Roughly 3–8 months is the easiest window, but newborns to toddlers are all possible β€” we plan around your baby.

Is the water warm?

Yes β€” baby sessions use a heated pool kept at a comfortable temperature, year-round. Warmth comes before everything else for infants.

Do I get in the water?

Yes. A parent is in the water holding the baby for the whole session. I'm in alongside with the camera.

What if my baby cries or won't settle?

Completely normal, and fine. We take breaks, warm up, and try again β€” or capture beautiful dry parent-and-baby portraits instead. You go home with a full set either way.

How much does it cost?

€430 for the baby first-water session, pool venue billed separately at cost. Book alongside an underwater maternity session and the baby session is βˆ’15%.

How many photos do I get and when?

20–30 edited images in a private gallery within 14 days, with print- and mobile-ready files.

Do you speak English on set?

Yes β€” English with you, Spanish with the pool and crew. All admin and delivery in English.
